I was sitting in the garden at Alex’s house (he lives near the Dance Attic), after Sunday’s Capoeira class, waiting until it was time to go to Manuela’s 50th birthday party, when Dayanna called from an upstairs room “Have you seen my mum’s museum?”. Alex and Dayanna (D) are siblings and we all met at Mojubá Capoeira London.
Neither myself nor Sarah had seen it, and when I heard the word ‘museum’ I jumped up and walked upstairs very quickly. Before we entered the room D showed us a wall in the hallway covered with photos/posters of a Colombian carnival/event which her mum had organised for a few years. She brought a few hundred people from Colombia to perform in London. Wow, pretty impressive, I thought…
Then we walked into the room. D’s mum was sitting on the sofa, unassumingly. She looked just like an ordinary and youthful woman in, I think in her 60s… The walls and some of the ceiling – and it looks like a work in progress – there seemed to be more things being prepared to be installed – were filled with wonderful mementos and photos of this amazing woman’s travels (sorry, I need to find out her name!).
When we came downstairs after a good 20 minutes of looking around and talking to D’s mum and D, I tried to convince Alex (he works in the film industry) he must do something about this room and his mum. I think I’d go over everything that’s there, capturing it all in detail – like a virtual visit to this room where everything can be seen, while his mum talks about the items + her travels. There are some amazing photos too, as she’s also a photographer.
I hope Alex gets around to doing it. Meanwhile here’s a very short preview of this amazing room!
