Wednesday 7th of February 2007 – First filling!
You had a little cavity, which I noticed last week, on the lower left hand side molar (the first one after the canine) and so I booked a little visit to the dentist yesterday afternoon. You also have the top right hand side canine growing at a funny angle so I wanted to know when would be a good time to see an orthodontist.
The dentist said we should wait till you’re between 10-12 years old until assessing whether you’ll need braces or not as most of your teeth are still milk teeth. She then proceeded to drill the cavity without an anaesthetic, as it was a very small cavity and it hadn’t got to the nerve yet. I asked you to hold my hand and squeeze if it hurt so she would stop drilling. You squeezed my hand twice, and you looked so scared, blimey, it’s odd going to the dentist when it’s not you on the chair… You were brave and she finished the job without anaesthetic as you said it was ok to go on. So you have your first filling, it’s so small you can’t even see it! It’s on a milk tooth as well. I’m hoping you won’t end up like me, with a million fillings in my mouth because I don’t think my mum ever told me to brush my teeth regularly or not to eat so much sugar (at least I don’t remember her ever telling me, maybe she did and I just ignored her) – by the time I was 18 my mouth was filled up with those horrible silver fillings from eating too much sugar.
The first time you came to the dentist with me, when the dentist was looking at my mouth, and doing the standard cleaning of teeth, you ended up being sick in the bin! You actually had the flu at the time so that’s why you were sick, but the dentist wanted to stop doing what he was doing because he thought it had something to do with the fact that you never seen anyone at the dentist before. You were fine after that though and he finished the job. I hate going to the dentists, horrible places they are. Same goes for hospitals.
On Monday evening we counted up all of J’s loose change (I went to the bank and got lots of money bags) and we filled up lots of them and had £23! Before going to the dentist we went to the bank to change it to notes, and the bag was so heavy my arms were sore afterwards, you could only carry it for a few meters (you really wanted to carry it all the way). We were well pleased with ourselves with the money we made – you said you want to use it to pay for your archery lessons (they’re having them at your school, during school hours, which I think is pretty cool). You said that on your first lesson, you hit the 5 meter target every time and the 10 meter target on 2 out of 5 attempts, according to you only one boy did better than you…
