Saturday 27th of May 2006 – Song to the siren/Sultan’s Elephant

Went to Offline at Jamm on Thursday, while you were with you dad and someone I know through Urban75 played one of my favourite songs ever, Song to the Siren, by This Mortal Coil (this isn’t the original but it’s the version I love), here are the lyrics:

SONG TO THE SIREN

On the floating, shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
til your singing eyes and fingers
drew me loving into your eyes.
And you sang “Sail to me, sail to me;
Let me enfold you.”
Here I am, here I am waiting to hold you.
Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you here when I was full sail?
Now my foolish boat is leaning, broken lovelorn on your rocks.
For you sang, “Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow.”
Oh my heart, oh my heart shies from the sorrow.
I’m as puzzled as a newborn child.
I’m as riddled as the tide.
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Or shall I lie with death my bride?
Hear me sing: “Swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you.”
“Here I am. Here I am, waiting to hold you.”

Brought a tear to my eye, it always does! They’re called ‘Salt and Blue’, and they consist of Jess (RubyTooGood) playing the hurdy-gurdy and a guy playing the cello. Here’s their entry in ‘MySpace.com’

Jakob – cello
Jess – hurdy-gurdy, vocals, mandolin, melodeon

We are based in South London.
Influences Folk music from the UK, France, Iceland, Eastern Europe and places we dreamed about once; Whirling Pope Joan (and anything else involving Nigel Eaton), Björk, Norbert Pignol, Radiohead, The Cocteau Twins, The Silly Sisters, seal noises, drone-based music from anywhere, myths, legends and fairytales.

It was wonderful!

J and I are off to Metaponto, Italy again next week, on Tuesday! Can’t believe it’s been nearly a year… I really need a break, I’m looking forward to 2 weeks off!!!! It’s been raining practically non-stop in London for the last 2 weeks or maybe longer and it’s been sunny in Metaponto, hopefully the weather will hold. You’ll be staying with your dad, like last year.

A couple of weeks ago the Sultan’s Elephant came to London, I went to see it with friends, even though it was raining all day. It was one of the best days out I had in a long time.
